The Bigfoot designation means it has a larger, lower-ratio gearcase designed to spin a larger prop at low rpm.You might get it to work on your 1648, especially if you load the boat to the point that planing is difficult. It will probably take some experimentation with different props before youre happy with it, if ever.
Mercury 40 Hp Bigfoot Problems Professional Checks ThemUsed motors are pretty much a crapshoot unless a professional checks them out. I appreciate the feedback, I think Ill forgo the bigfoot since thats not really what Im looking for. Keep in mind that major repairs on an outboard that old may cost you more than it is worth. Buy it with the thought of it possibly becoming a throw-away motor. I seriously doubt that this motor is for a 25 inch transom, as the seller states. If it was factory installed starter it will have charging,if it was installed later it may or may not have charging. I am not interested in arguing with the guy.especially if he is looking at the motor, and I am looking at a picture. If that motor is really a 25 incher, it is going to be really tough to sell. Mercury 40 Hp Bigfoot Problems Serial Number From HimMercury 40 Hp Bigfoot Problems Serial Number FromIm trying to get a model and serial number from him.but on the surface does this sound like a good deal or is he trying to rip me I dont know enough about motors to know what to look for or what a fair price is. I would be more comfortable at 1250 for an electric start 25 hp if it sounded good. If you do go look at it, it probably would not hurt to bring 12 ben franklins. I gave the merc dealer the serial numbers from his mariner(which has the same decal pattern as the one you are looking at) and he told me it was a yamaha powerhead. I have a 50 hp 4 stroke mercury now that has a yamaha powerhead. You would be able to get any parts from any mercurymariner dealer. I know there will be tons of motors out there in the next few months so Im not in any hurry, but dont want to let the right one get by me either.is there any concern buying a motor that old That just seems really old for it to last more than a few more years. I would be concerned with some other brands that find the need to make changes and upgrades every few years. I havent seen the motor run.but you will. The guy is a mechanic too and said if I had any issues just to take it to him and hell fix it back up for me.all in all I feel pretty good about it I just hope it isnt too much motor for my 1648.this is my first boat so I really have no clue what to expect.
